The Bend-Redmond metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has once again earned recognition for its robust economic performance, achieving a fourth-place ranking in the Milken Institute’s 2025 Best-Performing Cities report. This represents an increase in two positions since 2024, and Bend-Redmond remains firmly in Tier 1 and among the top-performing small cities in the United States for the ninth consecutive year.
The Milken Institute’s Best Performing Cities report assesses 403 metropolitan areas across key economic indicators, including job growth, wage growth, high-tech GDP growth, and community resilience. The Bend-Redmond MSA continues to stand out in multiple categories, solidifying its status as a top choice for economic growth and innovation.
Bend-Redmond’s robust labor market is a key factor in its continued success, with five-year job growth ranking 14th and five-year wage growth placing fifth among small cities. The region’s technology industry is flourishing, with significant contributions to Bend’s high-tech GDP from software publishing, which has risen an impressive 40.3% since 2018.
Despite these strengths, the area faces challenges, particularly in housing affordability, though its ranking has improved in this area from 184th to 117th this year. Income inequality remains a challenge, with Bend again ranking 133rd in the Gini index, signaling disparities in income distribution. Addressing these challenges will be essential for limiting future labor market growth to sustain Bend-Redmond’s long-term economic strength and competitive edge.
